3 Marketing Essentials You Must Never Forget.
Yellow Customers are all mine!
I’m older than you would ever think!
Over the years, trust me, I’ve seen it all, and working with the biggest global brands and with business owners alike – I know a bit about marketing.
And in marketing, the basics haven’t and never will change.
All kinds of marketing mistakes which stop good businesses just not getting it right.
Things like:
- Fussing over logos and branding - Relying on word-of-mouth leads..........
- Procrastinating over, well everything
However…
If I had to pick the biggest, most costly mistake of them all?
It would be getting their marketing fundamentals back-to-front... …by focussing on the “media” before the “market” and “message.”
Let me explain :)
Once you understand these 3 marketing fundamentals, you’ll find it a lot easier to keep your marketing on track:
1. Market
Everything starts with your market and knowing WHO you’re selling to:
So in B2B it would be
Their industry
Their job titles
And their objectives and problems relative to your product/service.
Sounds simple…
But a surprising number of businesses don’t understand their market half as well as they should do.
2. Message
This is not any one advert, post, email etc.
But the overall marketing message you communicate to your market.
Are you articulating what you do in THEIR words and not your own?
Their jargon, not yours.
Big difference.
You need to be able to describe their problem in a couple of sentences, in a way that makes them sit up and take notice.
3. Media
This is the distribution of your message to your market.
For example:
TV
Radio
Outdoor
Social Media
Digital marketing
Leaflets
PR
Sales Promotions
Which brings me back to the big mistake many companies make:
They ONLY focus on the media.
ie. They blast out DMs, send 1,000s of cold emails, try some paid advertising and…
Guess What?
They don’t get any results, so they blame the media and say “it doesn’t work”.
Sounds familiar?
When in reality....
They’re saying the wrong thing… (message)
To the wrong people… (market)
At the wrong time.
Which is a recipe for a lot of frustration, head scratching, and slow sales days.
And why I say they’re doing things “back to front”.
Because you should always, ALWAYS start with your market!
Dial into your market FIRST.
Then your messaging.
And then and only then fine tune the media.
For example:
Start with 1 media (ie. E Mail Customer marketing)...
Get it working…
And then add another, and another, and another.
Bottom line…
THIS.
IS.
HOW.
YOU.
GROW YOUR BUSINESS.
But it’s only possible if you start with your market and WHO you’re talking to.
And work your way from there.
Make sense?
And that's why it takes time to get this right.
Because the best ideas aren't always new, and that looking back and learning from the past can help us move forward.
It's old school , with new tricks.
And this marketing works.
